Founded in 2019, the georg katzer ensemble comprises young, excellent instrumentalists. With three world premieres by Dustin Zorn, Fabian Zeidler and Reinhard Lippert as well as works by Liza Lim and Charlotte Seither, they explore the opposing poles between individuality and the collective. Their work focuses on collaborations with Berlin composers of their generation, which they relate to works by established composers.



Dustin Zorn: Strategisch/Imperfekt (2023)
I have known these musicians for years. I carry their acoustic form in my memory and can hear them play without them being present.

The stage can be a representation system in the theatrical sense that refers to social structures. Speakers and microphone are a technical representation system that enables a temporal and spatial decoupling of sound and production. Both perspectives overlap in this piece in perception, strategically and imperfectly.

Liza Lim: Wild Winged-One (2007)
The piece for solo trumpet with "wacky whistle" is based on fragments from Liza Lim's opera The Navigator, which was created in Berlin in 2007. In the opera, the trumpet is associated with the "Angel of History," a hybrid figure of human, animal, and divine being that functions as prophecy and witness. The solo piece employs human and animal breathing sounds, murmurs, and vibrations in a web of "comments within comments." It integrates the word "inside" from the opera, which comes from the line "a man inside a woman inside a man who makes love with water."

Charlotte Seither: Echoes of O's (2007)
In this work, the experience of a visualized musical form process takes the place of sound. The title refers to the various shadows of meaning of the sound "O," which - as we all know - can receive constantly changing meanings depending on the gestural context.

Fabian Zeidler: MINIATUREs (2023)
During his composition studies, Zeidler began to compose and explore ambivalent sound worlds by connecting jazz harmony, melody, and rhythm with his contemporary musical language. The focus of the music is on creating a musical balancing act between allusion, i.e., the familiar, and the unknown. In the six miniatures, the composer examines selected parameters and engages with them compositionally.
